My Postpartum Fitness Journey – 7 months in

It’s so hard to believe that it has already been 7 months since I had the baby! Time really does fly when you have kids! He is already getting so big and when I look back at some of his newborn pictures it makes me think, “Wow, is that even the same baby?!” I’m sure all my fellow mamas know what I’m talking about! Time moves so fast especially during a baby’s first year. I am savoring every moment with him and acknowledging that these days will be gone in the blink of an eye. Soon he will crawling, then walking, etc.

I want to share a bit about my postpartum fitness journey so far. I am happy to be getting in a pretty nice routine of running/walking nearly every day and spending a lot of time outdoors. Now that it’s spring, and the weather is nice, it feels great to go on walks and get outside to exercise! It took a while after I had Ethan to start exercising again. Once I did, I jumped into it pretty quickly. I signed up for a half marathon and starting training, only to make it to my 9 mile long run, then I pulled a muscle in my back and wasn’t able to run for about 2 weeks. After that, I was behind in my training and made the decision to not run the half marathon. I was disappointed, but at the same time, not too worried about it because the most important thing for me is to listen to my body and do what I need to do to take care of it.

Over the last few weeks, I finally got back into a nice exercising schedule and I’m feeling really good about it. In addition to just having a baby 7 months ago, we have definitely been keeping busy, between moving to a new state and starting a new job. Things have just been crazy! But crazy in a good way! ūüôā

One new habit that I have put into effect since moving to our new house is my morning walks with Colbie (our shitzu). Every morning since we moved in last month, I take Colbie for a 10 minute walk before I leave for work. I definitely feel like this has helped me to start my day on a positive note, and I like to have it as part of my routine. There was a day or two where I skipped it, and I noticed that my day was a bit off. I was missing out on that boost of energy that the morning walks give me. I am happy to continue this new routine and I’m sure that Colbie is enjoying it too!

So what’s next on my postpartum fitness journey? Hopefully a lot more running! And definitely a lot more walks. I’m planning to sign up for a 5k in June which my husband and I plan to do together (maybe we’ll bring the running stroller!). I also have been thinking about brushing the dust off my road bike and starting to do some bike workouts in the basement or on the trail, just to switch it up a bit. I like to add variety to my workouts and the bike might do the trick. Most of all, I’m looking forward to a great summer in our new home and in our new city as a family of 3! Spending time with my family is at the top of my priority list, and spending time together while we exercise is like icing on the cake!

A Little About Me

So I figured that since this is a brand new blog, it would be a good idea to introduce myself a bit more and share more about myself and why I started this blog.

I’m Lauren – I am 30 years old and currently live in New Jersey with my husband Jeff and our dog Colbie. ¬†Jeff and I met almost 10 years ago during an internship in college and we have been together ever since. ¬†We have been married for over 4 years.

I grew up in Pittsburgh which is about 6 hours from where I live now. ¬†Most of my family and friends still live out there and I love going to visit them. ¬†I’ve lived in New Jersey for almost 8 years now, and I work full time at a large private company as an Operations Manager and I love it. ¬†I think having fulfilling work is so important to having a fulfilling life.

We have some big life changes ahead because Jeff and I are currently expecting our first baby! ¬†I’m due in 2 weeks with a baby boy and I can’t believe this pregnancy has gone so fast! ¬†It feels like it’s been super long and I am at the stage now where I am ready to meet the baby and move on from being pregnant! ¬†It was fun while it lasted but I am ready to kiss my little guy’s face!

Some of my favorite hobbies are having an active lifestyle, running, cooking, reading, writing, spending time with my husband, friends and family.  I am very type A and I absolutely love planning, organizing, budgeting, creating training plans, etc.  Organization is one of my biggest strengths!  I love to read blogs and I have been inspired to create a blog for a long time.  I have always loved writing and I have been a huge fan of journaling since I was a kid.  I also love the idea of connecting with others through common goals and interests!  The idea of community really drew me into the blogging world.

I started running for the first time in my life about 4 years ago. ¬†After my first 5k, I fell in love with running races and I’ve run 2 marathons, 4 half marathons, tons of 10ks and 5ks, and even a sprint triathlon. ¬†Running became like therapy to me and it has helped me to grow in so many ways! ¬†When I found out I was pregnant earlier this year, I decided to take a break from running for a while and find other ways to stay active instead. ¬†Now that the baby is almost here, I am really looking forward to getting back into running and incorporating my favorite hobby back into my life as a new mom! ¬†I am truly looking forward to crossing the finish line at that first 5k and having my husband and son there to welcome me!

My goal from this blog is to connect with and inspire others to live a healthy lifestyle and be the best that they can be. ¬†Something that I have learned is life is all about balance, so I will be striving to find balance as a new mom and can’t wait to learn from others too!

The Benefits of Walking During Pregnancy

Walking is highly recommended as one of the best forms of exercise during pregnancy. ¬†There are many benefits to keeping up with a regular walking routine. ¬†I am typically a runner,¬†but I have enjoyed walking throughout my pregnancy and I’m still going strong at 37.5 weeks! ¬†For me, one of the best parts of walking has been that it makes me feel great! ¬†There are many other benefits too. ¬†Below, I put together a compilation of the top benefits of walking during pregnancy.

Disclaimer:  You should always talk to your doctor before taking on a new exercise routine during pregnancy.

  1. Healthy baby – walking helps to keep both mom and baby’s weight at a healthy level. ¬†With the baby’s weight in check, this can make the delivery more easy and natural. ¬†It also makes it easier for mom to lose the baby weight after baby arrives.
  2. Lower risk of Pre-Eclampsia & Gestational Diabetes – Walking helps to keep your blood pressure and cholesterol at a healthy level, therefore reducing your risk of developing pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes.
  3. Stress Reliever РThis is a big one for me!  Pregnancy can be very stressful!  Walking helps to relieve stress, anxiety, depression and mood swings because it releases endorphins (the feel good chemicals) into your body.
  4. Bonding with significant other РThis has been another huge benefit for me!  My husband has been joining me for almost all of my walks, and it has been a great way to unwind together, bond, and talk about our new lives with the baby.  If your significant other likes to walk, bring them along so that they can enjoy the benefits of walking too!
  5. Relieves aches and pains РThere are lots of different aches and pains that happen during pregnancy.  I have had my fair share!  Walking helps to loosen your joints, ease your muscles, and relieve some of the pain you may be experiencing.  For me, this has mainly been hip pain.  I have noticed that if I go a few days without walking, my aches will be much more noticeable.
  6. Easier childbirth – So many people have told me this throughout my pregnancy, and I did a little research and it looks like it is true! ¬†Walking increases flexibility and tones the hip muscles which can make for an easier/faster delivery. ¬†When you are in good shape, your body is more prepared for childbirth. ¬†I am hoping and praying that this is true! ¬†I’ll let you know in a few weeks! ūüôā


Something that is very important while walking during pregnancy is to listen to your body. ¬†If you need to slow down, slow down. ¬†If you need to take a break, stop and rest. ¬†During pregnancy, the point isn’t to push yourself too hard, so be sure not to wear yourself out. ¬†Also, don’t compare yourself to others. ¬†Everyone’s journey is different and it’s important to remember to make decisions that are best for you and your baby.

Why I decided to stop running during pregnancy

Well, here I am at 37 weeks pregnant! ¬†I am almost to the finish line of this pregnancy and I can’t wait to meet my sweet baby boy in only a few weeks! ¬†In some ways it feels like the pregnancy has gone fast and in other ways it feels like I’ve been pregnant forever. ¬†One of the hardest parts of being pregnant has been giving up some of my favorite things because I know it’s the best choice for me and the baby. ¬†I tend to be on the conservative side when it comes to making these pregnancy choices.

One of the hardest sacrifices for me has been giving up running. ¬†When I first became pregnant, I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to continue running or not throughout my pregnancy. ¬†I have followed and watched many runners on Instagram who have run the entire way through their pregnancies and had perfectly healthy babies and no problems! ¬†I talked to my doctor about it and she told me that since I was a runner before, there was no risk to me continuing running in pregnancy. ¬†That was reassuring, so for the first few weeks after I found out I was pregnant, I continued doing some short runs – mostly 2 or 3 miles. ¬†As the weeks went on, I started to have some lower back pain, and continued to worry that the running was going to hurt the baby. ¬†The bouncing and intensity of the running made me uncomfortable. ¬†It was bothering me so much that I was thinking about it all the time, and I decided it wasn’t worth the worry. ¬†I made the decision then that I was going to remain active during the pregnancy – mainly through walking, and running could wait until later. ¬†For me, piece of mind was the most important thing.

Now, at the end of my third trimester, I am glad I made this choice. ¬†I give props to all the moms-to-be that continue running throughout their pregnancies but I decided it wasn’t the right choice for me. ¬†Walking has been an excellent way to stay in shape, burn off energy, and bond with my husband over these last few months. ¬†Now I look forward to easing back into running once the baby is here and I get the doctor’s clearance! ¬†Once the baby is a little older, I plan to use my new BOB running stroller that we got for our baby shower! ¬†My first goal will be to complete a 5k, and maybe a half marathon after that. ¬†I can’t wait to get back into one of my favorite hobbies so soon!

Hello Blogging World!

Hi everyone,

I decided to get serious and create my first blog. ¬†I have been thinking about doing a blog for years, and I am finally ready to take the plunge. ¬†My hope is to share my interests with you and to connect with others and hopefully inspire or motivate others to do what they love and live their best lives. ¬†The main topics I plan to blog about are fitness (I am a marathoner, triathlete, and fitness enthusiast), style (I love expressing myself through fashion, jewelry and getting creative with my own personal style), and pregnancy/parenthood (I am currently pregnant with my first baby – a little boy! ¬†My husband and I are so excited to begin the new journey! ¬†I know that it is going to be an exciting new adventure and I can’t wait to share it with you!)
